What are the right chemical levels for a pool in Florida?

For a residential Florida pool the common targets are free chlorine 1–3 ppm, pH 7.4–7.6, total alkalinity 80–120 ppm, cyanuric acid (stabilizer) 30–50 ppm, and calcium hardness 200–400 ppm. Salt pools add a salt target, usually around 3,000–3,500 ppm depending on the generator.

Why does my chlorine disappear so fast?

Three usual causes in Central Florida: stabilizer too low, so direct sun burns chlorine off within hours; an algae bloom already consuming it faster than it is added; or heavy organic load from pollen, leaves, and rain runoff. Testing stabilizer is the first step, and it is the level most homeowners never check.

Should I fix pH or alkalinity first?

Alkalinity first, almost always. Total alkalinity buffers pH, so a pool with alkalinity out of range will not hold a pH correction no matter how many times you adjust it. Get alkalinity into the 80–120 ppm band and pH usually settles into place with far less chemical.

Do salt water pools still need chemical balancing?

Can unbalanced water damage my pool?
